Personalized Letter:	You may or may not know that the ONLY full-time progressive talk format on radio in the Boston metropolitan area was suddenly yanked off the air December 21, 2007 without warning or recourse. The liberal voice of Boston, Eastern Massachusetts and Providence, R.I. could once be found at 1200-AM (WKOX) and 1430-AM (WXKS). Now thousands of progressives in the Boston, Fall River and Providence area are searching for another outlet. Meanwhile, the region is saturated with over ten conservative talk radio stations. How does one of the bluest cities in the Union lose its progressive station? The station owner, media giant Clear Channel, showed no interest in making it work. In a pattern repeated across the nation, Clear Channel invested virtually no resources in local programming, local advertising, or signal strength, then suddenly flipped the format, citing weak advertising sales even in the face of evidence to the contrary. We are a grassroots group of citizens working together to bring the format back to our airwaves. We believe that a true democracy must be well informed by a diversity of opinions and points of view. The issue is bigger than Boston. This is about media consolidation and corporate control of our airwaves across the country. Other cities across the country as diverse as Fresno, Duluth, Columbus, and New Haven are facing the same situation. Meanwhile, in Madison, WI, a group of citizens worked together and kept progressive talk on the air. In Phoenix, AZ, another group, with the help of the Nova M Network, leased a new, community-driven station. We in Boston hope to achieve success with these groups as our models. The FCC's mandate states that the airwaves belong to us and must serve the public interest. If you believe in this goal, you can support our efforts by signing the petition.
